Home Gardening Insights Interview

By Interviewer at 11/01/09 18:18

Name of your website?

Home Gardening Insights

Your name?

Therese Owen

Your Location (city, etc)

St Catharines

Please give us a short summary of your website?

General gardening website covering a broad spectrum of gardening topics including pond and fish keeping which is a passion of mine , but with an emphasis on new and beginner and newbie gardeners as they need most help and often more experienced gardeners websites forget what it was like not to know the difference between an annual and a perennial plant. Also such topics as Gifts for Gardeners and creating focal points and garden art for the garden spaces with an emphasis on using repurposed and recycled materials, will be featured .

What inspired you to launch your own website?

Two years of back problems, prevented me from doing very much at all. Let alone the garden, the complete absence of even a hint of a green thumb on any of the hands of my family member’s , no thought of mowing the lawn, let alone watering the plants, entered any one of their heads. You may imagine in what condition I found my garden when I returned to it after my back surgery. The problems of two years unchecked weed growth and no watering, besides what fell naturally, compounded by the loss of all privacy due to a newly built sub division. I didn't feel really capable mentally or physically to under take such a huge challenge alone so decided to create a web site to log my progress of my own garden to hopefully acquire some online gardening friends and to remind myself about all my favorite plants and to create a plant wish list of new plants for when I am at the stage of restocking my garden

When did you launch your first website, and what was it?

My first website the website I maintain now was launched in May of last year on the Wordpress free hosting platform its name there was Along the Garden Path I recently relocated it to a private domain hosted by a friend of mine who had offered to let me share her domain name wandasworx and also help me promote the site and contribute some articles to it herself

How did you decide on a name for your website?

I just wanted a name that would allow me to include a broad range of gardening subjects short of just "gardening" which was too simplistic I decided to choose Home Gardening Insights sometimes shortened to just "Home Gardening" I was glad of the opportunity to change the name of my website when I decided to relocate it to my friends domain as along the garden path had always implied at least in my mind a beautiful and completed garden and mine is the furthest from

What makes your website different from other, similar offerings?

When I relocated and renamed my website I decided to include not only information for the experienced gardener but to write more in depth explanatory articles tailored towards clueless newbie gardeners what led me to this new perspective was that my son having just moved into his first home wanted to create a garden and despite having come from a far reaching line of compulsive gardeners had no gardening knowledge what so ever not even the difference between an annual and a perennial

What is your eventual goal? (To sell it, keep it for income, secure a book or other mainstream media deal?)

possibly one day I may include adsense on it to create a little income that could help Wanda cover next years domain costs but I will have to find out about it first as I know nothing about it I created the site purely as a passtime

How does your investment of time and money balance against your success?

That remains to be seen

What method has been most successful for promoting your website?

hopefully the move to sharing the domain belonging to my friend she knows a lot more about computers the net and seo than I do so hopefully she will be able to help me understand it more

What is your website address?
